How Long Does It Take to Learn Surah Yasin? A Realistic Plan for Families

Kids Quran TutorAcademy Editorial Team 6 min read

Surah Yasin is one of the most loved surahs in a Muslim home. Many families hear it at gatherings, recite it on Fridays, or simply want their child to carry it in their heart. So a common question from parents is: how long will it take to learn it?

The honest answer is that it depends on your child's reading level, age, and how regularly they practise. But you can still plan realistically. This guide gives you clear time ranges, a simple weekly plan, and the mistakes that slow children down.

How long is Surah Yasin?

Surah Yasin is the 36th surah of the Quran. It has 83 verses and sits across the end of the 22nd juz and the start of the 23rd. In a standard Madani mushaf it covers about five and a half pages. Many verses are short and rhythmic, which helps memorization, but several passages look similar to one another, which is where children often mix things up.

Learning to read it vs. memorizing it

Parents sometimes mean two different goals:

  • **Reading it fluently from the mushaf.** If your child already reads the Quran with basic Tajweed, this can take a few weeks of guided practice. If they are still on Noorani Qaida, they need to finish those foundations first.
  • **Memorizing it (hifz).** This takes longer and needs steady daily revision, not just new lines.

Realistic time ranges for memorizing

These are typical ranges we see, not promises. Every child is different.

  • **Confident reader, practising daily (about 15–20 minutes at home):** roughly 2 to 3 months.
  • **Confident reader, practising a few times a week:** roughly 4 to 6 months.
  • **Younger child (ages 5–7) or still building fluency:** 6 months or more, and that is perfectly fine.
  • **Adults with busy schedules:** often 3 to 6 months with a steady routine.

Speed matters far less than retention. A child who learns three verses a week and keeps them is ahead of one who rushes ten and forgets them.

A simple weekly plan

  • **New lines:** 2 to 4 short verses per session, or 1 to 2 longer ones.
  • **Repeat each new verse** 10 to 20 times while looking, then from memory.
  • **Link it:** recite the new verse together with the previous few so the surah flows.
  • **Revise daily:** spend at least as much time reviewing old verses as learning new ones.
  • **Recite to a teacher:** a teacher hears small Tajweed errors before they become habits.

Our classes are short, 20-minute 1-to-1 sessions, three times a week, which suits this pace well. Read more in our Hifz program.

Mistakes that slow children down

  • **Memorizing before reading correctly.** Wrong pronunciation gets memorized too, and is hard to undo. Learn Tajweed basics alongside.
  • **Skipping revision.** Most "forgetting" is simply missing review.
  • **Mixing similar verses.** Point out look-alike passages early and practise them side by side.
  • **Long, tiring sessions.** Short, calm practice works better than one long weekend push.

How parents can help at home

You do not need to read Arabic well to help. Listen to a trusted reciter together, ask your child to recite their latest verses at dinner, and celebrate milestones such as finishing each page. Should you start with Surah Yasin?

For many young children, starting with the short surahs of Juz Amma builds confidence first. Older children and adults who already read well can begin Surah Yasin directly. A teacher can assess your child and suggest the right starting point.
